Hot tub on board a yacht

Today, electric propulsion is our present and no longer just a future idea. This applies to many means of transportation, including yachts. Electric yachts could be the floating homes of the future, offering numerous advantages but also some challenges, particularly regarding autonomy. In this article, we will explore what electric yachts are, their environmental impact, and the pros and cons of their features.

The technology behind electric yachts

The electric boat sector is constantly evolving, with numerous technological innovations on the horizon. Among the most promising advancements are fully electric yachts, which integrate solar panels to extend autonomy and improve energy efficiency, as well as sailing boats with auxiliary electric motors and new technologies for charging batteries at sea. To get a clearer overall picture, let's take a look at some examples of electric yachts and the technology they are based on.

Eco 80 sail

This is a catamaran provided by Sunreef Yachts, equipped with a so-called "solar skin" that covers the entire perimeter of the vessel’s structure, including the hull edges, mast, and superstructure. In this case, solar panels are placed where they typically wouldn't be, allowing them to capture solar energy from every angle. Additionally, the Eco Sail is designed to be powered by other renewable energy sources, such as wind and hydroelectric power, thanks to a sail integrated into its structure.

HH – HH44 catamarans

This model features a large battery that can be easily recharged using dedicated solar panels and two electric motors. These motors are used for electric propulsion up to 7 knots for a maximum of a couple of hours. This propulsion system, called Eco-Drive, is a parallel hybrid that combines diesel propulsion with electric power, enabling long-range navigation with minimal noise.

Silent 80 tri-deck solar

This yacht uses an all-electric propulsion system that, when necessary, can be supported by a kite sail. This allows for unlimited and fully autonomous cruising, ensuring silent navigation without any risk of water pollution.

Candela seven

This is the first electric hydrofoil boat in circulation, designed and manufactured by the Swedish company Candela Speed Boat. Its wings lift the hull entirely above the water’s surface, aiming to achieve zero-emission sailing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption by 80% compared to other planing boats. In fact, once it reaches a speed of 20 knots, the Candela can travel up to 57 miles on a single battery charge.

Nimbus 305 drophead e-power

This yacht is equipped with an electric motor powered by a battery system called Torqeedo Deep Blue, which takes 16 hours to charge from a 230V power source or 8 hours from a 380V source. In addition to the motor, the electric propulsion system enhances the boat’s high performance, ensuring smooth and comfortable mobility on the water.

Advantages of choosing an electric boat

The primary advantage of electric boats, and the main reason behind their development, is the complete absence of CO2 emissions from the engines during operation. This significantly reduces air and especially water pollution. The use of electric technologies helps protect marine ecosystems by preventing fuel spills and reducing noise pollution. Since fuel is not needed for navigation, maintenance costs are also lower and less complex. Electric boats are much lighter and easier to manage. Another benefit is extended navigation without frequent stops for refueling, making these innovative boats ideal for long cruises. Lastly, the quietness of electric motors not only reduces noise pollution for marine life but also ensures a more relaxing and comfortable experience for passengers on board.
