Pools on yachts are often equipped with overflow systems that require a balance tank to regulate the water level. This tank, integrated into the filtration system, ensures there is enough water to maintain the proper operation of the whole system. However, if the water level in the compensation/balance tank is inadequate, various issues may arise.

Below, are some of the main causes of balance tank malfunctions on yacht pools and their respective solutions.

The balance tank is empty or its water level is low

The main cause of an empty or insufficiently filled tank is due to malfunctions in the automatic filling system. Potential issues include:

Dirty or blocked solenoid valve

The solenoid valve controlling water flow might be dirty or clogged, preventing proper operation. In this event, it is necessary to disassemble and thoroughly clean the valve, including the solenoid, which may be blocked by debris, preventing the valve from opening.

Lack of power supply

It is crucial to check whether the solenoid valve is receiving power. Typically, the valve operates on low DC voltage, usually 24V. If power is failing, it may be necessary to check the power supply, PLC, or electrical panel to identify where power interruption occurs.

Mechanical float malfunction

If the tank is equipped with a mechanical float, it may not function properly. A faulty float can prevent the solenoid valve from opening or closing. These floats have a lifespan of about three years and need periodic replacement. Testing the float with an electrical tester can confirm if the contact is functioning correctly.

Electronic level sensor malfunction

Modern systems often use electronic probes to monitor water levels. If the sensor does not correctly detect the level, it will not send the necessary signal to activate the solenoid valve. It is essential to verify if a 4-20 mA signal is being emitted. If needed, replace the sensor, ensuring the new one has the same technical specifications.

Lack of water supply

Typically, water is supplied by a pump which draws water from the yacht's potable water tank or seawater. If water is not reaching the balance tank, check the filling pipe, ensure the pump is working correctly, and verify its power supply. If the pump is faulty, proceed with its repair or replacement.

The balance tank is overflowing

Another common issue is an overflowing tank, often caused by the solenoid valve remaining open. The potential causes include the same ones mentioned above, plus:

Blocked solenoid valve

If the solenoid valve remains open, water will continuously flow into the tank, causing it to overflow. In this situation, follow the verification and cleaning procedures outlined in points 1, 2, 3, and 4 above.

Other possible causes of malfunction

  • Sizing issues: If the balance tank has been incorrectly designed or sized according to the pool's volume and usage conditions, it will not be able to effectively manage water flows, leading to issues such as overflow or insufficient compensation capacity.
  • Tank leaks: A leaking balance tank may not be able to maintain the correct water level. Periodic inspections should be conducted to check for cracks or structural damage.

Advanced solutions: Remote monitoring and control

Thanks to technological progress, Centro Italia Yachting makes use of a remote hardware system to monitor and diagnose issues remotely. This system can detect anomalies in operation and, in many cases, solve problems without the need for on board manual intervention. In the event of a physical malfunction, the system can pinpoint the defective component, enabling swift and efficient replacement. With proper maintenance and monitoring, balance tank issues can be minimized, ensuring an optimal operation of yacht pools. Do not hesitate to contact our Service Center for support using the form on the contact page.
